According to the Grammy-nominated country singer, she knew the second she said, “I do” to Michael Ray at their 2019 wedding, that it was a mistake. The singer-songwriter spoke to Bunnie XO on Bunnie XO’s Dumb Blonde podcast, where she revealed some of the difficult details about the marriage that ended in divorce just eight months later.

Pearce made her fame with songs like Every Little Thing, and Should’ve Known Better. The Kentucky native made the revelation about her failed marriage with Ray in a new podcast appearance. Pearce appeared on Bunnie XO’s Dumb Blonde podcast, where she talked about what initially went wrong between her and her husband. According to the country star, she married the “Hold On, Girl” hitmaker out of lust more than love. “I got married to go the distance. When I married him, I did it for the right reasons, but I knew the night I got married, I shouldn’t have,” Pearce said.

Pearce went on to admit that while she did want to make her marriage with Ray work, she and her former husband were ill-prepared to work on their relationship. According to the singer, there were things they both did not know about each other. “We didn’t have real conversations, and we didn’t really know about each other. We were kind of living this life that wasn’t really reality,” Pearce said.

Pearce revealed that she was in love with Michael Ray during their whirlwind romance, but she has since realized that it was mere passion she felt for the “Country Comes to Life” singer. “I thought he was so cute,” Pearce said as she reflected on their courtship period. “I’d heard he’s the nicest guy in the world. I invited him to my No. 1 party for Every Little Thing. Looking back on it, it was a hot and heavy lust. It wasn’t love. It was just passionate.”

Pearce further revealed that she made the mistake of marrying Michael Ray, not because she didn’t want to go the distance, but because she just knew it was not right. “It wasn’t what I signed up for. It just wasn’t the marriage that I knew I deserved. I knew that very quickly. Plenty happened to where it was very clear to me this was not, this just wasn’t a marriage,” Pearce said as she reflected on the failed marriage.

The chart-topping country music singer has not revealed what went so badly wrong between the pair, leading to their divorce, which she filed for in 2020, just eight months into their marriage. While talking to Bunnie XO, Pearce was asked about the swirling rumors around Ray, cheating on her. The “I Hope You’re Happy Now” singer said: “People have all their opinions, and, at first, that was so hard for me because I was like, ‘That’s not true, that’s not true, that’s not true. What he’s saying isn’t true.’ But, at the end of the day, my friends who walked that with me know. My parents know, and God knows, and that is enough. It’s enough.”

Pearce, however, said that she is now at the happiest stage of her life, and she credits Ray for making her the stronger person she is today. “Thank you for teaching me. I actually have a lot of self-worth,” Pearce said, while talking to Bunnie XO. “A lot of self-worth … Thank you for putting me in a situation where I learned how much I really care about myself.”
