Invasion Season 3 debuts August 22: what fans can expect

If you have somehow managed to avoid watching Invasion, Apple TV+’s sci-fi drama series from the creators of the Netflix smash series Hunters and the X-Men movies, it is not entirely your fault. It was a platform hit but arguably a bit lost amidst the hype and fanfare around two other Apple original series: Silo and Foundation. It has gained a loyal fanbase, but its reviews have been mixed (especially for the first season), particularly from those who felt it was overly slow-burning. Even among fans of the show, there has been the occasional confession of a “love/hate” relationship.

On the other hand, the series has had many pluses. The cinematography, for one, has almost always been beautiful and unique, and the showrunners have at least been going for an ambitious, theme-oriented kind of storytelling (if not always 100% successful in terms of execution). Apple TV+ has now shared the trailer for the third and, so far, final season, and the tone and promise in it suggest that the series may at last have found its full stride.

Season 3 Teaser Trailer Brings Characters Together For Epic Mother Ship Standoff

Created by David Weil (Hunters) and Simon Kinberg (producer and screenwriter of several X-Men films, as well as the Oscar-nominated writer and producer of The Martian), Invasion’s central premise has always been tantalizing: the concept of an alien invasion, filtered through a multiperspective storytelling style that focuses on regular individuals from around the world. With main storylines happening in the United States, Japan, and other places, the viewer sees how characters with different backgrounds and storylines overlap and diverge across cultures. The use of English, Japanese, and Pashto gives it a more rooted-in-the-real-world feel despite the global, otherworldly stakes.

Season 1 was more or less about the build-up to the alien invasion and threat, with the actual aliens being mostly background to the emotional drama between characters (sometimes to the dismay of impatient viewers who were expecting more explosive, alien action). This was par for the course for a relatively character-driven take on the sci-fi genre.

Season 2 was about how these characters from all around the world tried to cope with life after the full alien invasion had become a reality. Humanity was suddenly pressed into small, quarantined safe zones where it had to survive with meager resources against a hostile environment and, sometimes, impossible choices. It was in many ways a sequel that found its feet and gave the show new energy by dialing up the action and raising the stakes.

Season 3 Brings Characters Together For Epic Mission To Save Humanity

The official premise for the upcoming third season of Invasion promises that the main characters, who had their separate storylines in different locations in the previous two seasons, will now meet and join forces for the first time. The season, set two years later, will see them all on board an expeditionary mission to the alien mothership.

The trailer signals that the threat level has changed in some very big ways, too. The apex form of the aliens has evolved and mutated to become a tentacle-like creature that seems able to disperse tendrils that are quick to latch onto and overcome its targets. This is, once again, something of an escalation from previous seasons: as the characters are pushed to combine forces for a suicide mission against the invaders, old alliances will be retested while new ones are formed under the pressure of circumstances.

Returning cast members for the third season include Golshifteh Farahani as Aneesha Malik; Shioli Kutsuna as Mitsuko Yamato; Shamier Anderson as Trevante Cole; India Brown as Jamila Hudson; Shane Zaza as the nefarious yet charismatic tech mogul Nikhil Kapur; and Enver Gjokaj as Clark Evans. A new addition to the main cast as a series regular is Erika Alexander.

Story-wise, Season 3 is not only about building toward a final dramatic crescendo, but also about finally giving the audience the larger-scale, action-oriented showdown and scenes of alien contact that have been somewhat absent from the previous two seasons (despite the central alien invasion premise). This is a show that has taken a more intimate, emotionally and thematically weighted approach, but now it may have more space and confidence to show off the spectacle it can offer, too.

Invasion Season 3 will premiere on Apple TV+ on August 22, 2025.
