The International Space Station is experiencing a persistent air leak that is causing concern among NASA officials while delaying the launch of a scheduled commercial astronaut mission. Axiom Mission 4 must now wait because of the leak because it was planned to transport four astronauts to the space station.
NASA confirmed the mission delay but withheld specific information about the situation. According to knowledgeable sources who have insight into the situation, the leak constitutes a major concern. NASA now approaches minor problems with heightened caution as the International Space Station approaches its 30th year in orbit.
An Old Problem Returns—In a New Way
The ISS has faced air loss problems before this incident. The ISS has had a slow yet constant leak since 2019 which originates from the Russian Zvezda service module. The Russian Zvezda service module launched in 2000 represents one of the International Space Station’s oldest components. The problematic area within the Zvezda module has been identified as the PrK transfer tunnel. The PrK transfer tunnel links Zvezda to the main docking port utilized by Russian Soyuz and Progress spacecraft.
Over the years Russian cosmonauts performed multiple repair attempts on the PrK. All repair attempts failed to completely solve the issue. The repair efforts succeeded in lowering the air loss to just a few pounds daily. The most effective method to deal with the issue has been to keep the PrK hatch shut until docking operations require it to be opened.
It appeared that the resolution of the issue had been achieved just weeks prior. Roscosmos reported that their latest repair work fully sealed the PrK module. NASA confirmed the statement indicating that air leak rates inside the module had ceased.
The pressure measurements throughout the entire International Space Station kept decreasing soon after the initial stabilization. That raised a big question: The station continued to experience air loss even though the PrK module had been sealed.
Experts have pinpointed the hatch seal leading into the PrK as the probable source of the leak. The model shows air gradually escaping through the hatch seals into the PrK while the area stays pressurized. The absence of leak readings within the module while the station loses air supports this explanation.
NASA is now closely monitoring the situation. According to an industry insider who spoke to Ars Technica the leadership at the agency expresses concern regarding the situation’s implications. The Axiom-4 mission has been delayed because of these concerns. NASA announced that delaying Axiom Mission 4 creates more time for NASA and Roscosmos to assess the current conditions and decide if further troubleshooting is required.
NASA has set a new possible launch date on June 18. The development of this leak issue in the next few days will completely determine the outcome.
