Google officially unveils Android 16 after months of rumors and test builds and Pixel phones will receive the update first.

Users can now begin to receive OTA updates through their devices starting today. Users who prefer immediate access can download system images and update files from Google’s developer site.

Users won’t find any radical changes in this update.

The launch of this update resembles recent Android releases because it includes only a few noticeable features. The most exciting developments are planned to launch later this year. Pixel users will notice the subtle improvements which Android 16 introduces.

The notification system has been noticeably improved through refinement. Bundled notifications introduced in Android 7.0 Nougat have helped maintain a cleaner notification experience. Android 16 advances bundled notifications by requiring all apps to implement them. Single app alerts will now combine into a neat stack that you can expand. No more endless scrolls through repeated updates.

Live update notifications are another welcome addition. The feature initially works with select rideshare and delivery apps by displaying a status bar icon that shows the current progress in real time. When you tap the icon it unlocks a popup view that shows live progress updates in a progress bar. Samsung and OnePlus have partnered with Google to enable deeper integration with their systems Now Bar and Live Alerts.

There are also security upgrades. Android 16 now includes Advanced Protection as a built-in feature. The tool operated on Google account level before but currently functions independently on each device. The system now blocks 2G connections while preventing USB devices from system access and blocks outdated security protocol website visits.

Android 16 lets Pixel users play with generative AI emojis as a lighter feature. The Pixel Studio app together with the Emoji Kitchen lets you design unique emojis purely for entertainment.

Developers haven’t been forgotten either. The internal enhancements of Android 16 (API level 36) bring multiple improvements. The newest version allows apps to automatically adjust their display size for both tablets and foldable devices which aligns with Google’s strategy to promote larger-screen Android devices.

Camera support now includes advanced functionalities like night mode detection, motion photos and HDR screenshots as well as hybrid auto-exposure for compatible applications.

Background processing is also more tightly controlled. This change will result in some older applications failing to function properly while your device will operate more smoothly and use resources better.

Pixel Drop Brings VIP Contacts and More

Google introduced a new Pixel Drop feature with the release of Android 16.

The most interesting part? Pixel VIPs. You can mark specific contacts in the updated favorites system which creates an individual widget for them on your home screen. The new interface includes recent Messages and WhatsApp conversations along with shared birthdays and location details when available. Do Not Disturb settings can be bypassed by users who are designated as Pixel VIPs.

Beyond Pixel VIPs the Pixel Drop features don’t offer significant new content. The Expressive Captions feature is now available in the UK, Canada, and Australia. The latest update brings hearing aid improvements alongside Magnifier app live search capability.

Not major changes—but nice to have.

The Bigger Features Are Coming Later

Google’s major features are still under development which explains why Android 16 appears less ambitious.

Explore Google’s new Material 3 Expressive design language. The new Material 3 Expressive design language debuted recently though this update doesn’t include it. The update will release later this year with Pixel phones receiving it before others. Developers have received instructions to begin preparing their applications for the upcoming visual update.

Another long-awaited addition is desktop mode. Samsung and Google have entered into a partnership to develop DeX platform capabilities. Android tablets will be able to support floating windows to make the operating system resemble traditional PCs. Both phones and foldable devices will exclusively support projecting desktops onto external displays. As of now, phones and foldable devices will not feature floating windows on their own screens.

The upcoming Android 16 release represents a change in Google’s operating system update schedule. Google has decided to release its main Android updates in spring while providing smaller API-focused updates during fall.

Android 16 has been designated as the primary update for 2025 but functions mainly as a foundational platform. The more exciting elements such as new design elements desktop functionality and richer integrations are yet to come.
